Social Media

Go here for a great blog about Social Media. The blog title: You don't Have to Blog, Tweet, or Be on Facebook. Go on, check it out!

The end sentence of the post: See social media as a way to connect with people who matter to you.

I don't Tweet. Okay, I do, but my tweets are few and far between. To me, Twitter is what my old boss called a time thief. Okay, he wasn't referring to Twitter because, well, it didn't exist back then. Time Thiefs to him, were the marketing reps who came into the office and wanted to sell us their products. Personally, I liked the time thiefs because they normally took me to lunch. I'm all about free lunch. Just saying . . . Ha!!

The main premise of the above blog is When you do interesting stuff—when you have something to say, a message to spread, or a story to tell—then social media makes more sense.

Exactly! Blogging, tweeting, Facebook shouldn't be something I feel I have to do, but something I want to do.

I think one of the reasons I pulled back from blogging for a while was because it became something I had to do, not something I wanted to do.

I have to work to pay my bills. I have to watch what I eat because otherwise I'll weigh 300 pounds . . . or more. I have to . . . well, you get the picture. I don't have to blog. I started to blog originally, my other blog not this one, because I had something to say. I started this blog, well, because I had something to say as well. In time, this blog become a duty, a requirement, something that lacked fun and excitement.

Twitter - oh, Twitter, you steal my time from me. I feel that I have to be on Twitter 24/7 or I'll miss something. So, I take the other extreme . . . I rarely get on Twitter. Yes, I know, I can interact with people in the literary field - agents, editors, writers (published and aspiring). Yes, I should be more Twitterfied. I'm not. Maybe one today.

Facebook - I love me some Facebook. I love connecting with friends, old and new. I find Facebook easy to manage.

So, in the end, I'm going to do what's best for me: some blogging, more Facebook, and an occasional jaunt into Twitterville every now and then.

How about you? Do you do all three social medias? If not, which ones do you do and . . . why?

I do the facebook/twitter/blogger thing...though I'm not good at it. I'm never consistent enough, never witty enough for 140 characters or less, but I try to update my FB status now and again. I always wonder if the social networking thing is really working for me. Am I reaching my target audience? I am selling myself as an author? Will my efforts equal book sales? Honestly, I'm not sure.

I tweet even less that I post on my blog. I'm a reader more than a speaker.
I read the post you linked and couldn't agree more. Thanks for that.

@Amanda – I’m not necessarily sure that social media = book sales. I have Followers and Friends, and yet I’m positive that all of them won’t want to buy my book. Why? Well, everybody has their own specialized interest in reading. If a friend only reads romance, why should she suddenly change and read a mystery just because I wrote it. She shouldn’t. The main thing I love about Blogger is that I’ve connected with people who totally understand the writing thang! They get it when I say I’m blocked or frustrated or . . . whatever. So, there’s the benefit of blogger. Facebook is similar. Twitter . . . I don’t have a clue.

@Charlie – you’re welcome. Perhaps the ‘reader more than a speaker’ comment applies to me as well. Blogger is all about reading and, maybe, commenting. Twitter seems – at least to me – something that is constant, ever-in-motion, and that if I miss five minutes, then I’ll never catch back up.

I HATE twitter. Just saying... But you know, the more I do it the more I love this blogging thing. I find--like you, if I only post when I have something to say, it becomes a joy.

I do blog, tweet, and facebook. They all do different things for me, and I do have to pull back sometimes to maintain sanity. It's a tricksy balance.

I blog more than I use facebook. I don't tweet at the moment. I probably will at some point, but I've barely got the time to keep up with blogging and facebook.

@Happily – hate’s such a strong word. Ha!! I think, whether blogging or writing (other than blogging which is writing), it’s when we follow our hearts that we’re the happiest. Forget following trends. Write what you want to write!!

@ Elana – who are you and why are you stalking me? Kidding!! I know you do all those things, and quite well I might add, plus having those Query Ninja skills that I’m so envious of. I do think there comes a time when we all need to step away from the computer and just gel for a bit . . . maybe even for a month or two.

@Cheree – time is the key to everything. It’s easy for me to blog or FB at work, because, as long as our jobs are caught up, they don’t care if we’re on the Internet. It’s harder at home. Go figure.

I do all three because I feel it's necessary right now. Of course, then I get into ruts and write posts like the one I did today about my Two Experiences. Yeah. Sometimes I just feel lost, and doing things because they are necessary is often not fun and things that are often not fun shouldn't be done. Than again, I've given up blogging and fb-ing and tweeting before and missed it a lot. I think it's mostly about balance, that's all.
